This week’s weather forecast for Holland MI is expecting rain with warmer temperatures. This typically isn’t such a big deal for this time of year; however, this is an advisory warning for possible floods in homes and businesses due to all the snow we have had this winter. An excessive amount of snow melt is saturating the ground and making it hard for water to drain properly. We are expecting rains to come in the next 24 hours and due to high moisture content in the ground, rain water may not be able to drain properly causing floods. We advise homeowners to double check sump pumps as well as clear out window wells and low entries for flood precaution. With rain and snow melt saturating the ground, excess water may seep into basements and garages.
As a precaution, DO NOT plug a sump pump into a GFI outlet – these are the outlets that have two buttons in the center that say “Test” and “Reset.” A GFI outlet often times may trigger or “pop” and cause the sump pump not to run. Make sure the sump pump is plugged into an outlet of its own on a separate breaker. Also, periodically check your basement and garage to make sure water is not seeping in.
As a note, damage caused by water seeping in through cracks is typically not covered by insurance companies, but it is always a safe practice to have a water restoration company at least give an assessment of the damage and where moisture has gone. Not knowing where moisture goes could end up in mold behind walls and cause even greater damage to the structure.
If you experience a sump pump failure, this is typically covered by insurance and water restoration bills would be paid for.
